Coast Riders, CA
The Coast Riders is an indepedent motorcycle club based in the Vancouver area of Britsih Columbia. We welcome all bikes and riders but are primarilly a cruiser based club. Read on and find out more about this club.....
In October 1991, three Vancouver area members of the Virago Owners Club got together for coffee in the first of a series of informal get-togethers. By the following February another half dozen people had joined and the Greater Vancouver Chapter of the VOC had been born. We established our pattern of regular monthly meetings (that were more social than business), group rides and social events such as summer barbecues. Our group grew steadily over the next few years and in the Spring of 1995 our membership was over 50 and we were one of the largest VOC chapters in North America. At that point we adopted the name of "Coast Riders" for our chapter to give ourselves a distinct identity.
In the meantime, other VOC chapters were springing up across the Western United States, particularly in California. As the VOC "Family Reunion" was usually held in one of the Eastern or Mid-west States, we decided we needed a Western get together for VOC members. In 1995 the Coast Riders hosted the first Pacific North-West Regional Rally at Manning Park Resort in Southern BC. It was a huge success with 65 riders and passengers attending the weekend event from all over Western Canada and the United States. The tradition had started and subsequent rallies have been held in Merritt, Princeton, and Oliver each year since with attendance growing to over 100 people getting together for a four day event.
The Coast Riders continue to flourish with membership hovering around the 90 mark and most members living in the Lower Mainland area of Southern BC. We have always had a strong contingent from Vancouver Island and after a brief try at starting a chapter there (The Island Riders) that group has come back into the fold and now form an important part of our club. We hold regular rides to the island to get together with our "overseas" branch.
Yamaha discontinued production of the Virago in 1999 (with the exception of the 250) and began the run of the highly successful Star line of bikes. This started the trend of Virago owners moving on to new and different bikes. This also contributed to the demise of some of the western US chapters of the VOC as they evolved with their memberships. While the eastern chapters remained committed to the Virago, the western groups moved on.
The Coast Riders have always been an open club welcoming all riders on all bikes. While our members have traditionally been drawn to the club as Virago owners, many have stayed on even after acquiring different bikes due to the friendships made in the club. In 2003, we realized that only about 50% of our members rode a Virago and most of the new members we were attracting rode other makes and models. We were also having less contact with the parent club (VOC) and felt that we had the infrastructure in place to operate as an independent club. Therefore, on January 1, 2004 we made it official. We dropped our affiliation with the VOC and are now registered on our own.
So who are we today? That’s a little hard to describe, but we’ll try. We are still primarily a cruiser oriented club, with a smattering of touring bikes thrown in. However we are also a "Riding" club with many of our members running up a significant number of kilometers each year. Our group rides range from short breakfast or dinner rides, day trips to special events, longer day rides of several hundred kilometers, weekend overnight trips, and tours lasting several days and thousands of kilometers.
We also have a couple of club barbecues each year and we end our riding season with a dinner and dance each November. The highlight of each riding season is our annual 4 day rally and we are hosting our Ninth Annual Rally in July 2004. Check out some of our activities in the events section of this web page.
