Getting a Motorcycle licence in NZ : --- Anyone over the age of 15 can begin the licensing process. The licence system is controlled and operated by the Automobile Association. Before you approach the AA you will need to pass your Basic Skill and handling test. Once you have this you go to the AA to sit your theory test. Copies of the test are in the back of the "The Official New Zealand Road Code and Licence Guide for Motorcyclists" If your motorcycle licence is your first licence you will need to pass an eyesight test. You have to hold your learner's licence for 6 months before applying for your restricted licence. The next step is to pass your practical test to get your restricted motorcycle licence. This is a test on the road followed by a testing officer. You must have a motorcycle with a current WOF and registration, and have your learners licence with you to do the test. (all three will be checked before commencement of the test). If you are under 25 years of age, you can apply for your full licence once you have held a restricted licence for 18 months. This time can be reduced to 12 months if you have completed a driving course approved by the Director of Land Transport Safety; and you began the course no less than 6 months after receiving your restricted licence. (Ask the AA for course details) If you are aged 25 or over, you can apply for your full licence once you have held a restricted licence for 6 months. Miniature view of http://www.megarider.com/ border= The MegaRider website - Masterton, New Zealand
The MegaRider.com site is the site of the New Zealand Motorcycle Safety Consultants (NZMSC). The NZMSC is a non-profit body working on motorcycle safety and riding skills promotion in New Zealand and internationally via the Internet. If you want to ride better - faster and safer, if you want to know the riding secrets that professional riders use to get the most out of their bikes, and if you want to feel safe in heavy daily traffic...and confident on your weekend rides, this site is here to help you learn how to do that. The term "Megarider" is probably new to you. The Megarider name came from experienced US motorcyclist Lyle Noordhoek, a medical specialist who sees too many of the results of motorcycle crashes. Lyle is an NZMSC customer who, as happens with many of our customers, has also become a firm friend. We agree with Lyle's idea that a megarider is the rider who can not only control his motorcycle with extreme skill, but also control himself and his emotions, and, in subtle and often sneaky ways, controls or channels the actions of motorists around him to help make his riding safer, swifter, and more enjoyable. It's not easy becoming a megarider. There are many hidden aspects to motorcycling that are too easy to be unaware of - the vanishing point, countersteering, direction perspective, psychological control, hypothermia, message flow, crash survival techniques, etc. To be a megarider, you must know about these and lots, lots more. Remember, you are only as good as the people you ride with. You need to ride with experts to be sure of being really good. Top motorcycle racers rarely go into top level racing and start winning every race. As good as they are, the learn by being exposed to the environment of professional racing. You, too, need to ride with the experts to learn and grow. It doesn't take long to learn the physical skills required to ride a bike. Once you've learnt them, you internalise them then move into learning higher level skills, gleaned from all sort of places - riding buddies, books, the media, and sometimes formal training courses. Sometimes you pick up bad habits as well as good ones. That's why you need a professional to gently critique your riding habits and pass on, either by example or by direct tuition, even higher level skills. That's one of the things we are here for. We also publish and sell riding skills books and send out a free riding skills e-newsletter (see top left hand side of this page) to help you gain more internalised skills - to build your riding knowledgebase. We even invented a fun motorcycle riding skills table game to help riders gain more riding skills knowledge and information. The reason for our existence is to improve motorcycle riding skills and to help riders ride well and safely and, in the process, increasing their enjoyment of riding. As a way of promoting better riding we have a MegariderPro system that allows you to become a megarider and maybe improve your skills in the process. It isn't difficult to do and it can save you life in a crisis situation. You can do it. All you need is the will to try. Give it a go! On the MegariderPro site you will find advanced riding skills information plus a lot of training material.
